Food Assistance / SNAP
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) helps Utah families buy food. Eligibility is determined by your household income and circumstances.
Program info
SNAP
SNAP benefits help low-income Utahns supplement their food budgets. If you qualify, you will receive an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card to help you buy food at authorized SNAP grocery stores and farmer’s markets. Stores that accept SNAP will display the Quest or EBT logo. Find out which online stores accept SNAP here. The amount of SNAP you receive is based on your household size, earnings and other circumstances.
What can you buy with SNAP?
Benefits are added to your EBT card each month. Most households must spend some of their own cash along with their SNAP benefits to buy the food they need. You can use SNAP to buy any unprepared food. This includes breads, cereals, fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, poultry, dairy products and plants and seeds to grow food. You cannot use SNAP to buy prepared items (hot foods and food that can be eaten in the store), alcohol, cigarettes, tobacco, non-food items (pet food and cleaning and paper products) and personal hygiene items.
EBT card
EBT Cards (Horizon Cards) are how you will receive your SNAP or cash payments. EBT cards are mailed at the time you submit an application for benefits or upon your request for replacement. Your card will not be loaded with benefits until your application is approved. Your EBT card will be mailed to you in a plain white envelope with a return address from Texas. Cards are often mistaken as junk mail, so check all your mail carefully for your EBT card. As soon as you receive your EBT card you will need to activate it and select a PIN by calling the Horizon Card Helpdesk at 800-997-4444.
How do you apply for food assistance/SNAP
From jobs.utah.gov, select ‘Sign in’ and ‘myCase’ in the upper right corner. If you have not applied for assistance before, select ‘Apply for Benefits.’ If you have a case number, select ‘Login with UtahID’ or ‘Create Account/Forgot Password.’
Apply online or in person at a local employment center. Eligibility varies based on your household size, monthly income, expenses, assets and citizenship status. To determine if you are eligible we will add together your household’s countable income and subtract any deductions. Deductions could include things like a portion of housing costs or child support. For example, a family of four with a monthly income that is less than $2,500 after deductions could qualify. If you think you may be eligible, we encourage you to apply. Benefits start the day of the application. The application is simple and takes less than 30 minutes to complete. If you have questions about the application or need assistance in other languages (including Spanish) please call 1-866-435-7414.
Receive your EBT card
Your application will be screened by an eligibility worker. If you are approved, funds will be added to your EBT card. As soon as you receive your EBT card you will need to activate it and select a PIN by calling the Horizon Card Helpdesk at 800-997-4444. Your benefits will automatically be deposited into your account each month based on the first letter of your last name (A-G: available on the 5th, H-O available on the 11th, P-Z available on the 15th).
